This is a fictionized biography of Alexander Majors, an honest, far-sighted, hard-working American of the last century. Born near what became Kansas City, he started a wagon freighter service, which first used the Santa Fe Trail but eventually branched out all over the West. His rules for drivers were firm, sane and brought results, no swearing, no cruelty, no work on Sundays. At first the dangers to the company came from Indians, later from over-expansion and competition such as Wells Fargo. There are interesting glimpses of the Mormons and an amazing feel for the extraordinary growth of our country. The Pony Express and the completion of railroads are interesting, the facts should be absorbing but there is not quite enough lift to the writing. Majros was a man of great importance in our growth up to his death in 1900 at the age of eighty-six.
