A stranger at the door, in an unlikely disguise and making an unlikely demand- for money owed for fertilizer, shoots a Connecticut farmer, and while there is much talk about his wife who seems to be an available type, and his brother, who claims to be a ladies' man, there is little more to go on. A slow, unsatisfactory investigation by the local police proceeds along blind trails; the fertilizer is anything but pay dirt; and finally a confession leaves a second question of innocence or guilt to be established. Doggedly realistic- and it picks up excitement at the end.
