This is much more than a piece of fine merchandise, for here-in a generous assortment of photographs, many unfamiliar ones, old prints, sketches and maps -- there is an accompanying text that is a lively history of the cavalry. North and South. The North started with a handicap of indifference and lack of realization of its value; the South with the advantage of ""Jeb"" Stuart, brilliant, inspired, fearless. But bit by bit, the North learned that the cavalry could serve as scouts, raiders, and offensive troops. They are all here- with pen portraits and stories of their successes and failures:- Stuart, Bedford, Forrest, Morgan, Mosby, Wheeler, Early, Hampton on the Confederate side; Stoneman, Davis, Straight, Grierson, Sheridan on the side of the Union -- these were the names that went down in history. And their raids, their marches, their achievements and their failures are here integrated into the story of the cavalry's war.
