In many ways, an interesting first novel, propagandist, violent, not a book for the popular taste. In intense, economical prove, this is a microcosm of revolt through the lives of its participants. The scene is Vienna of 1934, as the Austrian workers attempt to turn an armed general strike into civil war. Communists, socialists, 20,000 workers strike at Fascism striving to stem the tide. In flashes, ten of the leaders are highlighted, but the centralized action, the focus of the book, in the revolt itself, its attempts, its failures, with bloodshed, death, disillusion.
