Perhaps it isn't fair to pigeonhole a writer, but I was disappointed to find this a story about Florida West Coast instead of about the Caribbean island that Hobb White has preempted as his own. That aside, it is a fair to middling story, not wholly credible, of a little girl who has been sent to live with some cousins, and who finds things not at all what she had expected. And of the pretense she was forced to keep up -- and of the old shipbuilder who befriended her. The Edward Shenton illustrations are not up to his best.
