KIRKUS REVIEW

Of books about books it is hard to report, for every bibliomaniac has his (or her) special loves. This particular book has been out of print for some time; read today, it seems a literary curiosity, a book difficult to use, though demanding use. For here a man of tremendous erudition has brought together (confessedly a ""thing of shreds and patches"") what writers over the centuries have said about books and reading, and has woven these thoughts together in a way singularly his own. Difficult of straight ahead reading, but full of nuggets, and organized in a way wholly his.
