PAGOO

Holling Clancy Holling, who wrote Sea Bird and Ninn of the Mississippi, etc., adds another opulently illustrated, richly researched account of the life of a hermit crab to his earlier triumphs. The little Pagurus, (""Pagoo"", for short) of whom he writes, lives in Tide Pool Town. The life cycle of the little hermit crab is dangerous indeed. ""Old Instinct"" aids the plucky little crustacean as he molts, and wanders homeless through sea caves and grottoes until he finds a home in ""Travelling Towers"". Pagoo enjoyed his penthouse apartment in a pink barnacle stop a starfish until a hungry Sculpin devours his dream home. Only a chase by other hermit crabs could have made Pagoo venture into Deep Hole, where an Octopus lay in wait. Strangely enough, Pagoo is saved from the tentacle of the Octopus by a Moray Eel. Illustrations by the author and Lucille Webster Holling, twenty full pages in color and a myriad of black and white drawings, are superb. Those in color have jewel-like tones, while the marginal black and whites are more scientific and anatomical. A handsome contribution for the child whose current interest is life beneath the sea.
