John of known American botanist before the American wrote the words of this little in relation to Martha logan, early American And Bartram, too, recognized the contribution made by another , ranking high her garden up the Hudson. Thus early did women make their mark in an area in which they've continued to be pre-eminent.... This is a wholly book, bringing together as it does, in brief profiles, women gardeners, artists, from the days of the Bay Colony almost to the present. With two exceptions they are American women; the exceptions are the English Jane Lougien, who lemolished the idea that gardening was only for men -- and - jekyll who shattered the tenets of artificiality in garden architecture and planning. Story after story to the composite portrait. Fragmentary evidence -- almost and hesitant the early scene, and one gets glimpses of great names in American history Pierce Butler but the emphasis is on the women. Some of the stories are fragrant of the past, piquant, verging on sentimental, but there is a stern thread of the pioneer spirit, whether it be breaking with conventions or exploring deserts, mountains, wilderness, or bringing beauty to opening frontiers, or introducing new areas of activity. Rich fare and unusual and one can forgive some of the inadequacies of the manner for the reward of the matter.
