Lanky, blundering, self-reproaching ""Chip"" Hascomb, insurance investigator, arrives in Manhattan to track down the chief suspect in the bombing of a commercial airliner. He soon finds himself tilting at ghosts in a haunted office; beset by strange little men so completely ordinary looking that they fade right into the wallpaper, and in dutch with Lt. Kelly of the N.Y.C. Police Department. Chip, a day dreamer with what Kelly calls a ""fancy thinking"" mind, wonders if the suspect would really have left all that evidence that points to his guilt. Meanwhile, Kip receives a new assistant (also an anonymous type) and bodies turn up wherever the new Assistant goes. Is the Assistant really assisting or is he a suspect? And is the suspect the Assistant or one of the fresh corpses? Combining mayhem and merriment, it's an acrobatic double acrostic cunningly disguised as a suspense novel.
