THE WILD PUPS: The True Story of a Coyote Family

Hope Ryden, who introduced adults to the species in God's Dog earlier this year, camped in a van for weeks to observe and photograph this band of wild coyotes; here she describes the family's behavior from the birth of one litter until, the next year, the mother is preparing for a new litter for whom her now grown-up pups will be baby-sitters. Ryden's first person involvement is evident throughout in both her comments and in the touching moments she captures. In a way, the blurriness of many of the photographs only reinforces the family album impression, but it does limit--or distract from--our view of the subjects.
