HOW GLOOSKAP OUTWITS THE ICE GIANTS

One of the most endearing gods to come down the folkloric pike in some time stomps around the woods of eastern Canada and New England, creating the Maritime Indians and helping them to live at peace with nature before settling into his own idyllic afterworld. Curious as a child--despite his gigantic size and great powers--Glooskap is always amenable to his people's requests for help. On their behalf, he overcomes other mythic creatures: the ice giants, or a giant bird who stirs up terrible storms. When, eventually, he does meet his match, it's in the comic form of a small, rebellious baby. The final story takes him on a perilous, mystical voyage to a new home--from which he may someday return to help his people when they are in trouble. Good-natured, polished yet energetic storytelling enhances Glooskap's reputation on every page here, while McCurdy's vigorous, elegant wood engravings are especially well suited to depicting the giant's funny, noble face and conveying the drama and scale of each humourous, heroic tug of war. An excellent edition to please both storytellers and young readers or listeners.
