STRANGER IN THE HOUSE

An extraordinary page out of England's history, in the story of Caroline of Brunswick, of the last of the George's and of their battle to the death. She was accepted as his wife because he wanted his debts paid and she was the price, but all ""Prinny"" wanted was an heir and freedom to go back to his mistresses and his dissolute way of life. The personal story of her fight for a place in the sun is an interesting one and Howard Coxe has told it well. But one has a sense of being hung in space and time; there is no feeling of the England of the period, little realization of the other characters in the drama, outside the principals, no picture of the place in world history. In fact, if I had not had other books as background (even such a book as And So Victoria), I'd have felt at sea.
