So far as I can ascertain, this is the girst general history of the Jews of nt date, designed for boys and girls. Howard Fast has used his facility as story teller and as biographer in weaving into a story the intricate web of many centuries of Jewish history, the story of a people, the story of a faith, the story of a way of thought, of life, so deeply ingrained, so carefully guarded by law and tradition and rites and ceremonies that it made it possible for a race to survive other , in spite of destruction, exile, persecution, terror. A marshalling-in chronological order, of the Old Testament stories into a definite pattern of history. And than a bringing of that history up to the present, through tortuous years of sorrow and darkness, with occasional moments of light -- a triumph of survival over fearful odds. The story is marred by occasional pedantry, but on the whole it is very good reading, and an essential book for high schools, public libraries, and homes where the importance of a clearer understanding of the Jews is recognized. Because of the special place this fills, we are including it here. Might have a plus adult sale.
