Although the baseball boys in this one are in college, the mechanical plot and elementary characterizations place it in the very light category for this age group. Randy Barlow, sophomore reserve shortstop on the top team at Western U., does some detective work when his idol, Pooch Wilson, senior and top-notch short-stop on the team, is disqualified for playing semi-pro baseball in the summer under an assumed name. Randy suspects that Pooch spent his summer elsewhere, but as Pooch is silent on the subject, there is nothing to do but investigate. A trip to an abandoned mine, some old snapshots and savesdropping on suspicious characters, help to clear Pooch and crack a gambling ring.
