This is another one of Hugh Rae's feral prowls through the streets of Glasgow which are all gutters -- everything seeps and stinks. Weaver, a ""thief to trade,"" returns there at the summons of his former father-in-law to find the man who killed his young son more than a year ago, gratuitously. He also becomes involved with an old connection who gives him a job to do and with that man's girl, Hazel; but the main action is the retaliatory hunt in which he uses a live man as bait. . . . You will flinch -- you're expected to -- at the bald brutality of the proceedings while respecting the professionalism with which they are handled.
