A conventional, easy going but well paced chronology is paced by the period, begins with the Sepoy mutiny in India and ends with the Chicago fire, and obviously travels fast and far to keep up with Justin Kelly. When his mother and father die in India (cholera and combat) Justin is returned to Ireland, to the care of his grandfather, and the particular protection of Lord Bracca (whom his mother had deserted to elope with his father). Bracca is a dashing character, loved by many women, hated by a few, and the later target of Fenian rebels- and he moves in and out of the boy's life and this narrative. Justin grows up; has his first chambermaid; a later romance with Mollie, and as he joins her in America his personal history here ends.... While more ambitious than Clevely's earlier suspense stories (Morrow), this still does not qualify as more than light entertainment- which it is.
