THE TURNING POINT

A midsummer evening's entertainment occasionally brushes up against violence and follows the very changing fortunes of affable, unobtrusive Philip Mason who wins a packet on a football pool, gives up his second hand bookstore, and buys the old house which is a war memory along with Brenda, now the wife of his old enemy and new neighbor Snape. Snape, unpleasant when sober and ugly when drunk, kills a man and does his best to ruin Philip's reputation on an old and unfounded charge which- when taken to court-ends in Snape's humiliation. A calculating chit, Ninette, aggravates his resentment against Philip further- and when Snape is found dead (or was he murdered) Philip is the likely suspect for presumptive Sergeant Grimshaw. But his love for Brenda, and hers for him, more innocent than it has been made to seem, overrides all this and is rewarded.... A diversion, at most, this has been pleasantly populated and engagingly relayed to a rental audience.
