This elegant anthology, sequel to A Tide of Terror (1973), offers seventeen pleasurably macabre surprises, most unfamiliar even to aficionados of the genre. The three Benson brothers are back, with E.F. on Cornish witchcraft, A.C. on a kind of possession, and R.H. with a ghost tale at Canterbury. Eleanor Scott spins an authentic nightmare about a rural priest's battle with evil; Vivian Meik offers a graphic piece of black magic set in darkest Africa; L.T.C. Rolt uses the more prosaic backdrop of an iron foundry. Plus Ambrose Bierce on reincarnation, Charles Birkin with an unsupernatural horror story about an amoral child and various other chill eliciters. Splendid for those who enjoy the prickling of their thumbs.
