This book was published to accompany the opening of the major exhibition which debuts at the National Gallery in Washington on December 7, returns to the Cleveland Museum through the summer of '76, and will be mounted at the Grand Palais in Paris during the Bicentennial year. Organized by the curators of the Cleveland--our foremost museum after the Met--it includes images factual and fanciful, idealized and satirical, drawn from public and private collections all over the world.
