LOUIS SULLIVAN

The life story of an architect whose main claim to fame lies in his influence on thinking rather than his style. Both as teacher and architect, he tended toward instructions and construction dictated by today's needs rather than established standards. Born in Boston -- educated there and in Paris -- served his apprenticeship in Philadelphia -- and then went to Chicago, where he made his reputation. Recognized today for his influence with young men. Undoubtedly authoritative and will have appeal to those in the architectural field. But as a man he does not command interest, at any rate not in the hands of this biographer. A book most shops can pass up.
