MURDER ROUND THE CLOCK

By

Pub Date: May 6th, 1985
Publisher: Dodd, Mead

Pentecost's all-too-familiar Beaumont Hotel, its staff and guests--in a series of short stories focusing on the personality and intellect of manager Pierre Chambrun. . . who always gets his man (Murder in High Places, etc.). There are deaths by stabbing, shooting, poisoning, falling out of windows, and being pushed into freezers. In ""Murder de Luxe,"" one of the more interesting efforts (despite its less-than-credible ending), a VIP industrialist and his henchman use a child to blackmail her father into signing a contract. In ""The Masked Crusader,"" Pentecost captures some of the ruthlessness and hysteria surrounding a superstar. But, with the relentless sameness of backgrounds and the repetitious details about the Beaumont's operations and staff, this is an unusually numbing, colorless collection: best taken one or two at a time--and only for diehard Pentecost fans.
