This continues the autobiography begun in Education of a Diplomat (1936), and covers 1917-1937 in the author's career. From a light-hearted entry into the service, he has his eyes opened during war years in Switzerland as to the necessities of energy and intelligence in handling relations between countries. The U.S. after the war, 1920 in post war, pre Nazi Berlin, then Japan and the earthquake, back in Washington, and from 1927-37 in Switzerland as Minister, closely connected with the League affairs. A recapitulation of his work, a touch of gossip, of glimpses behind the scenes and off the record, all adds up to a good sequel.
