THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE: 1801-1917

The third volume in The Oxford History of Modern Europe follows the fortunes of the Russian empire from the reign of Alexander I to the abdication of Nicholas II. The emphasis is on political and social history; the period is considered without regard to successive developments. A large body of Russian documentary material, memoirs and commentary has been used in reference. The author is Professor of Russian History at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London.
