Two years ago Hulbert Footner published a book entitled Charles' Gift, an enchanting book about a house (his own) on the Eastern Shore, about the history of that house and its people and its place in the community. He carries this gift form creating periods and places into his handling of the mass of material on Maryland. I had a sense of intimate knowledge and love of the places of which he wrote, much of the time; occasionally, his material seems second-hand, as if he got it from a book, and not from his own associations. On the whole, however, it is an excellent ""state book"" -- though one of primary interest locally. One could wish for a bit more sense of the part Maryland has played in national history, chron logically presented, rather than in bits and places; one could wish also, for more of what Maryland means today, aside from her shipping interests, and a few scattered industries. But for the flavor and feel and look and atmosphere -- he leaves nothing to be desired. The sketches by Louis Kuyl are attractive, but it will be hard to measure up to the Suydam illustrations for the famous ""Century City Series"". This book will be similar in format.
