CONQUEROR OF SMALLPOX

The story of smallpox is the story of mass death and mutilation. It is also the story of Dr. Edward Jenner and his struggle-in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century- to combat, not only the disease, but repeated failure and the opposition of his wary contemporaries. In this biography, the medical details of Jenner's discoveries are lucidly explained while at the same time a sense of the man, a warm and dedicated doctor, is forcefully presented. I. E. Levine handles his subject knowledgeably and with full appreciation of Jenner's stature as a man and a scientist.
