When Robert and Elizabeth Thorpe arrive from America for a month's visit with their cousin Gavin, it is festival time in Edinburgh, and Gavin as well gets the thrill of the city as he helps show it to the newcomers. Their first days are filled with dancing exhibits at the Castle, museum trips and the lore of Stevenson and Scott; the children are even more delighted at the prospect of a motor trip around Scotland with Gavin's mother and father. Driving takes them north to Inverness, across to Loch Ness and down again to Glasgow and stops, sights and chats along the way provide a gay if loaded introduction to Scotland and Scottish ways.
