They take religion seriously on the campus of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and so it is not strange to find that there the chairman of the department of religion is also an associate professor of physics. Dr. Barbour can therefore make a unique contribution in the field of the interaction of faith and science by his analysis of how religion both assists and occasionally hampers a scientist and how the scientific approach can both bolster and occasionally shake a man's faith. He sheds a great deal of helpful light. Most treatments of the science-religion tension forget the man who is involved in that tension. Dr. Barbour concentrates on the fact that the interaction always occurs within a person. Therefore he has helpful insights for men in various callings and conditions who feel both the tension and the potential fruitfulness of that tension as these two differing disciplines affect their lives.
