MY LIFE WITH GEORGE

Thoroughly original autobiography of a witty and entertaining novelist, whose popularity should be enhanced by this unusually frank personal record. Her incredible childhood, with a father who escapes the bailiffs by exerting his charm and getting new backers all along the line, who always has a new woman on the side; with no mother, with a devoted sort of step-aunt -- this to me is the amazing part of her story. But certainly notlacking in interest and challenge is the record of her years in Germany, and her eventual adoption of the United States as the country of her true love. The mysterious ""George"" of the title is simply her very useful sub-conscious, which manages to retain what she needs and to exert influence on her creative powers when the urge is on her to write! The frank story of a woman who understands herself -- and whose sense of proportion and sense of humor makes this self-analysis revealing without once straying down the dangerous sidepath of self-dramatization or abnormal introspection. I know of no other record with which to compare it. Read it for yourself, and you'll not lack a market for its sale...So we reported it last January. S.E.P. serial rights intervened -- and now, after all these months, the impression still is vivid.
