A pleasant and nostalgic probe of San Francisco's early history retells the story of the large building erected in 1853 by General Halleck. An office building with apartments and studios on the upper floors, it was for years a miniature Latin Quarter for artists and writers had their homes and headquarters there and the lobby served as a forum for others -- Bierce, Twain, Bret Harte, etc. In 1906 it was the only office building to survive the earthquake. The Montgomery Block takes its place in the sun in lively style and is well-buttressed in considerable research and its story should have a definite local and regional appeal.
