HAPPY PLANTED A GARDEN

Happy yearned to be a soldier with a fox hole and a gun. His sister -- just enough older-persuaded him to be a Soldier of the soil; to dig a garden instead of a fox hole; and to use a spray gun on the enemies (including Japanese beetles). There is no attempt to make this a primer garden book, but Inez Hogan has simplified, down to the level of second grade readers, enough about what happens in a garden to make this a useful first book. Happy was the small boy who got himself a dog last season (Happy Wanted a Dog). Paper and board covers -- lots of pictures throughout.
