NICHOLAS' FAVORITE PET

From the summary on the last page: Nicholas ""didn't get an elephant or a rhinoceros or a hippopotamus or a lion or a snake or a crocodile... but he got what he wanted more than anything else in the world -- a puppy of his very own."" He also got some coquettishly informative reasons for not getting the others. But while you might think that he was deliberately working down to what he'd wanted-all along, no such motivation emerges: he seems to be discovering his longing for a dog at the same moment the reader does. All very abrupt, and none of it is particularly Sustaining.
