I have come here ""to start from scratch""--or disintegrate? The I is Lola who spent an idyllic two months on a Greek island with Stefan, married, as she knew, to Marianna, but also, as she didn't know, given to one-year sabbaticals. You'll remember Ingrid Bengis' Combat in the Erogenous Zone which was less assertive than its title and certainly than this. Here the mood is one of wan, defensive, sometimes panicky love--Lola always misplaces her affection. She does so now, looking for certainty while Stefan is obviously avoiding pressure. Lola drifts from one day to the disappointing next and you read it accordingly--intermittently, sometimes impatiently. Not an important book to be sure, not a lasting one to be surer, but if taken on its own terms, attractive enough, permeable.
