Tom is a good name for a cat which is likely to grow into a big and beautiful tomcat."" The ""likely"" happens, but in the process, Tom lives for a year in the mountain wilds. His young owners, Lisa and Perry, plead with their father every so often to search for the cat. After Tom has various adventures, he returns to his human friends who cart him back to the city. The cat's experiences are recorded in uninspired prose; the unsurprising ending is more sentimental than most cats would put up with and the double reversion-- to the wild and again to civilization-- is steadily being done to death through all the reading levels, including the adult.
