WILLIAM GLACKENS AND THE ASHCAN GROUP: The Emergence of Realism in American Art

A chiaroscuro portrait of the distinguished American painter, William Glackens, written by his son, highlights the artist on famille in Philadelphia, New York and Paris, but leaves in shadow much of the artist's personality that needs explanation. His association with the ""Ashcan Group"" is traced from its origin early in his career as well as his fruitful friendship with Dr. Albert C. Barnes, but paradoxically his account of Glackens' role in the emergence of realism in American art gives no clue to the motives or influences which impelled him to the artistic course he chose.
