For children who demand more luster and less (far less) technical detail than Glubok gives them in Discovering Tut-Ankh-Amen's Tomb (1968), the Swinburnes re-enact the tomb's discovery by archaeologist Howard Carter, whose last-chance dig in November, 1922, uncovered rocky steps leading to a closed doorway. . . the first of several sealed doors, shrines within shrines, and coffins within coffins through which readers will progress with him, pausing at each step to survey the treasures so revealed. The Swinburnes' bland commentary suffices to guide readers through the approximately 100 photos, which burst into color as the splendors are revealed. Complete with appended plastic overlays of the coffin, which fit the layer-by-layer nature of the investigation but don't add to the discovery, the format is designed to dazzle; considering the magnificence of the display, it can't miss.
