Ever wondered what a cat does when its people are on vacation? This black feline runs a hotel for his animal friends. As soon as the nice lady from next door who’s looking after him leaves, this cat has two crocodiles, five penguins, three tigers, and a moose come to keep him company. They lounge and read books, eat ice cream, and play music. When the nice lady comes back, they all hide. On the last night of vacation, cat and his friends have a party. The family thinks cat looks sad because he’s missed them, but he’s actually sad that his hosting stint is over. Schoch’s painted, patterned collages, reminiscent of Duvoisin or maybe a calmer Kalman, are splendid, especially the spread in which the animals are hiding from the neighbor. The moose is behind the couch, and two penguins are in a vase. Published under the title “Hotel d’éte” in France, this translation of a first picture book is sure to please with its dry, sly wit and cool-eyed main character. (Picture book. 3-8)
