KIRKUS REVIEW

A fascinating picture, this story of the author's family and his growing up in Turkey. Born in 1908, knowing the old life of his country and meeting the changes that have occurred, he tells of the impressive hardiness of his grandmother, in all her complete assurance and indomitability, of his mother whose loveliness and graciousness carried her through the days of poverty which came later, and the whole atmosphere of singing contentment which marked his childhood. The whole different background of the woman's world behind the of the social scheme of the bath, of the religious life in the mosque, the coming of emancipation and the battle between the old and the new and the issues involved both at home and in the nation, all of these add up to a personal history that is satisfying and unusual.
