A vivid, engrossing biography of one of the first women to penetrate the hallowed halls of medicine and fight her way to recognition. Emily Dunning's unusual intellectual abilities geared her toward less conventional pursuits than other girls of her day. College was the answer and medical school the dream. Despite her outstanding record at Cornell, Emily was refused hospital training until a fluke approach led to an opportunity for being tested. The seeming victory in attaining a staff position at Governeur Hospital in New York City set the stage for the greatest battle of her life -- a slow and painful struggle against the hardened prejudice of her male superiors. Employing all the techniques of demoralization at their command,-from unjust and extra assignments to open humiliation,- the good doctors waged their campaign. Even emergency ambulance duty could not break this lady doctor's will or spirit. She won her battle and its outcome is infuriating and inspiring reading. Iris Noble has recorded this story with warmth and understanding and best of all, with a minimum of sentimentality.
