The author, who has written animal picture books and others, here presents alive, interesting approach to the middle ages. To mix fact and fiction in a anner which results in an informative text is a rare feat -- one which Mrs. Black has achieved. Lucid explanations of the feudal system, the mailed knight, the castle life, etc. precede the appropriate stories. The study is divided into three parts (each accompanied by a story which embodies a medieval atmosphere): The Castle: How Goblemen Lived; The Abbey: How Churchmen Lived; and The Town: How Common People Lived. In his illustrations, W. T. Mars sees the medieval people as individuals, not stereotypes. This should provoke further reading about this period.
