KIRKUS REVIEW

The ""steam shovel family""- mother, father, Tressy and Pete, head west to visit grandparents in California, and their old car gets them as far as Kansas. They see new territory, meet friendly people, have pleasant adventures. And then the car gives out. Dad goes ahead to get work in his own field; Mother and the children stay behind until they can earn enough to go the rest of the way; eventually difficulties are resolved and the family is reunited. Refreshing story of a family at an economic level that is neither harried by debts and illness -- nor provided with a nest egg for travel and emergencies! Here are people who eat oatmeal and milk for breakfast- and have a good time, on little.
