THE REAL BOOK ABOUT EXPLORERS

An exuberant tribute to great explorers- and the near great-from Scyllax to Admiral Byrd, and explorations from the Arctic to the Antarctic, this record of true adventure has satisfying range of time, person and place. Many of the names are familiar to this age group- Leif Ericsson, Columbus, Marco Polo, Balbon, Champlain, Lewis and Clark, Perry. Less well known are the stories of Cabeza de Vaca, James Cook, Mungo Park, David Livingstone, and some of the Arctic explorers. The panorama of wilderness drama is related in almost breathless style, the drama sometimes artificially induced, the descriptive passages occasionally taxing the credulity. But on the whole, an entertaining introduction to a noble company of men.
