Without projecting human personalities upon the creatures who live in and by the sea, the authors in describing the various aspects of sea life endow their subjects with lively personality. Ranging freely from locale to locale, general groups-- birds, shell-fish, bay fish, whales and seals, squid and octopus, birds, jelly fish, etc.-- are scrutinized. Their habits, locale, and mannerisms are pointed out in a consistently appealing fashion, and the authors, both of whom boast an extensive list of nature titles, skillfully avoid talking in flat general terms by focusing on individual members of each group. A book with as much charm as information.
