A series of story collections from Boys' Life edited by Irving Crump, has made his name familiar, and the interest in this subject should create a ready market for his exciting, if dramatized, profile of our state police and how it functions. The chapters, each of which in on a different kind of situation or a particular case history, are a well measured combination of exposition and on the scene reporting, the kind of writing that maintains a certain breathlessness and suspense. Natural disasters, all kinds of felonies, police training periods and requirements, are all reported with a full sense of the exigencies involved. Compare this with John J. Floherty's books, for a plus account of a vocation.
