Returning to the source, and method of his Jacob (Random House-1941), this is a retelling of the Old Testament story of the beautiful Moabitess who left her native land to become a true woman of Israel. How she learned the teaching of Moses and the ways of life of the children of Israel from her mother-in-law, Naomi; how she made her place though a stranger among people who suspected her of evil purpose; how Boaz, following the law of Moses, asked to redeem the property of Mahlon, Ruth's first husband, and granted this- married Ruth. There is a strict fidelity to the original story and many quotations from the scriptures are worked into the conversations between the characters...Our reviews on his previous books have not tallied with other opinions, but still we found this slow, sober, serious reading and certainly not a too popular rendition.
