Communication in the conceptual sense of exchanging ideas and information rather than the technical sense of transmitting messages: a simple survey, one-third on language and writing, one-third on printing, one-third on communicating over distances (from semaphore to satellite), storing information electronically (including motion pictures and computers), and miscellany like specialist languages and translation. The distribution of information indicates the difference from existing studies: both Batchelor and Buehr focus primarily on the means, sometimes minor, of sending messages. The combination of drawings and photographs in a varied layout gives this an edge in appearance also. In a clear, concise form that exemplifies the subject, more thought than meets the eye (or ear).
