GREAT MEN OF THE SEA

From Noah to the scientific sailors, here is a readable chapter by chapter survey which should satisfy many a nautical interest. Moving from old legends to the first substantiated marine activity in the Mediterranean and in the north of the Vikings there is good background material on which the course of sea history rests. If the material and its arrangement are familiar in content and form (chapter progress from the spice trade and the age of discovery on through Elizabethan conquests, the rise of the American colonies and forth) they flow with efficiency and color for an adequate nutshell history of the ocean and those who sailed it.
