The results of a pro-poll of the year's best sports writing. Among the ringers: Art Spander of the San Francisco Chronicle whose Best News Coverage Story of the 70th Open golf contest won by British Anthony Jacklin wrapped it all up with an irreverent snap of the Union Jack; the New York Times' Robert Lipsyte, who delivered in his Best Feature a fine punchy portrait of William Harrison Dempsey at seventy-five; and Bill Bousfield, published in Outdoor Life, whose Best Magazine Story reported on the hunting down of an unfortunate black bear in the Canadian wilds. As for the rest, top articles on baseball and football run neck and neck with nine entries apiece; there are sections covering basketball, golf, boxing, tennis, hockey (surprisingly only two), horse racing, skiing, auto racing, yachting and the outdoors. The last category is a general grab bag of pleasantries, including a rueful item by Bill Conlin of the Sacramento Union, ""The Old Grad Goes Back to, the Big Game."" Biographies of writers and championship records wind up a durable collection; again the photographs boast their own award winners.
