A panorama of the 1966 sports world, this installment in the Best Sports Stories series features many in-depth ""thought pieces"" and personality sketches as well as the expected round-up of the year's most smashing moments. Also thirty of the top action pictures of 1966. In wordage football outpoints baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, boxing, soccer, etc., while the list of champions covers every minor and major sport. Many of the short spot news pieces are fine, though the reporters run to writing the same hypnotic, opening mood sentence about in-door sports arenas. By far the most high-toned piece is Gay Talese's lengthy ""The Silent Season of Joe Di Maggio"" which is from Esquire and is about the hero in autumn. But the most probing story is W. C. Heinz's ""Rocky Graziano Revisited"" in which the Rock does most of the talking while sometimes medical-writer Heinz solemnly feeds the straight lines. The story about Cleveland Williams shouldn't be missed.
