After too long a gap, comes this companion piece to Philosopher's Holiday. It is not a book that presents conclusions to the quest- but a book that shares some of the processes of questing:- it begins and ends with classroom interchanges; it meanders down the pathway of dreams of talks with the old philosophers- Plato, Marcus Aureliue, St. Paul, Spinoza, Schopenhauer; it presents a satire on the idea of outlawing philosophy; it shows what happens when a gifted teacher is bound down to the slogans of popular exposition; it opens up avenues of distraction, of scepticism, of rationalization. Perhaps most important in summation, it reveals that a philosopher must remain in process of reflection, of awakening, of doubt, of readjustment if he is to find a place in the world today. The book is a medley of essays on aspects of the philosopher's quest; perhaps it will prove a catalytic agent for some.
