A compendium of tales emphasizing heroism at sea, this book will hold the attention of the adventure minded reader. The author has assembled sea catastrophe stories, some of them classics, some little-known or forgotten, which testify to the strength of the human spirit under arduous conditions. Captain Kurt Carlsen's odyssey on the half capsized Flying Enterprise in 1951 will remind readers of recent history. Following this come stories of the classic fulturne and Morro Castle fires at sea, the Hal well which went on the rocks inside a cavern in 1786, or the famed Sultana which exploded in the Mississippi River in 1865, killing as many as 1600 soldiers aboard. But the emphasis is on the heroic stamina of the men involved--sailors and passengers who fought for their lives and the lives of others.
